An assistance dog is a trained working dog that helps reduce the impact of one or more aspects of their owner’s disability. This is a collective term that includes guide dogs, hearing dogs, medical alert dogs, mobility assistance dogs, and psychiatric support dogs.Certified assistance dogs have distinct legal access rights that go beyond those of pet dogs. These rights generally allow them to accompany their owner in most public places and on public transport.
What makes an Assistance Dog?
Any dog breed can qualify as an assistance dog, though some breeds are better suited. Choosing the right dog is very important, so we recommend contacting us before purchasing a puppy. To be recognised as an assistance dog under the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992, a dog must:
Be highly trained: by the owner, an assistance dog provider, or an accredited private trainer such as Take the Lead Assistance Dogs.
Pass the Public Access Test (PAT): completed every three years to confirm the dog is hygienic, well‑behaved, and under effective control in public.
Alleviate the disability: the dog must perform at least three trained tasks that reduce the impact of the owner’s disability, not just provide comfort.
